On 24th February 1854 following a meeting in the Town Hall by subscribers, a decision to form a public bowling green was deferred as the amount subscribed, including £15 from the town of Montrose, was not enough to construct a bowling green and the necessary accomodation. The meeting then resolved in to a Committee for the purpose of establishing a private bowling green providing a suitable site could be found and sufficient number of subscribers at one guinea came forward.
The site known as "The Old Bowling Green" was chosen, this being beside the Museum. At the 10th March 1854 meeting it was decided to go ahead with as little delay as possible and regulations of the Club and "Laws of the Game" were drawn up.
After the meeting on 17th July 1854, President John Boyd and the Committee inspected the green and having found it in a fit state for play declared it open from this date for members to play at acost of £25 5s 1/2p for the green only.
The first recorded friendly game took place on 13th October 1854 against a team from the Albany Bowling Club from Glasgow resulting in a win for Montrose 29 - 11. Many more friendly games were introduced in the ensuing years.
On Wednesday 19th May 1897 a new green and pavilion were opened by President A Dickson at West End Avenue, at a cost of £700. In the years that followed the membership grew to over 130. In 1962 the Ladies section was formed.
The Club moved to its present location in July 1998, but was not officially opened until 10th April 1999 by the legendary W W Wood MBE who was introduced by President D Stenzil.
In 2005 the Gents and Ladies Members fully integrated.
Over the years the Club has had major successes at Scottish and County level none more so than in 2006 when Mo Burden, Darren Smith, Scott Pirie and Scott Murray won the Scottish Rinks at Ayr and went on to represent Scotland in the British Isles Championships in Edinburgh in 2007.
Scott Murray became Montrose's first ever internationalist when capped for Scotland in 2008.
At present we have 5 members playing for Angus in the Hamilton Trophy and have been well represented in the past in this tournament.
The Club Secretary Danny Gillon has the unique honour of also being a member of Clackmannan Bowling Club whose Triples won the Scottish Championship at Ayr in 2008 and another member won the Scottish Junior Singles in 1987. Site Last Updated - 20/08/2010 17:03:21
